Well, we thought it was spring! You probably did too. But the back-and-forth that comes with the transition from colder to warmer seasons is the perfect time for reminders on how to protect your computers during turbulent weather.
Surge Protectors – During a brownout, blackout, or lightning strike, a surge protector prevents “shocks” to your computer by steadying the flow of electricity. Inexpensive and easy to find from any office supplier, a surge protector is a basic first step in protecting your office electronics. Bonus Tip: not all power strips are surge protectors! Make sure you have the right tool for the job.
This is the UPS at the Ontario Science Center. It is, ahem, taller than a 5th grader. Your desktop computer will not require anything this massive.
UPS — Essential for servers and higher-end workstations, a UPS provides seamless battery power that allows you time to shut down properly. Run times will vary; be sure your UPS is the right size for your computer. Bonus tip: Don’t plug other equipment, such as fans, into your UPS — it is there to protect your expensive computer. You don’t want your $10 desk fan to drain the battery before you can safely shut down!
Cloud Data Backup — Remote cloud backup means no more messing with tapes that can be forgotten, overwritten, lost, or stolen. In addition to power outages and other weather-related problems, off-site backup protects your data from fires, floods and other disasters.
Server/Data Room — Where is your equipment located? The best location is a secure, cooled, ventilated space away from electrical equipment that can cause interference. Don’t put your data equipment near water sources or areas that could be vulnerable to leaks or weather problems, such as near a window. Of course, a cloud server might be an option – and eliminates these other concerns.
